Rakshabandhan 2023 : often simply referred to as “Rakhi,” is a Hindu festival celebrated mainly in India and among the Indian diaspora around the world. It is a day that celebrates the bond of love and protection between brothers and sisters. The term “Raksha Bandhan” translates to “the bond of protection” or “the tie of protection.”
The festival typically falls on the full moon day of the Hindu month of Shravana, which usually corresponds to August on the Gregorian calendar. On this day, sisters tie a decorative thread called a “rakhi” around their brothers’ wrists as a symbol of their love, affection, and prayers for their well-being. In return, brothers give gifts to their sisters and often promise to protect and support them throughout their lives.
The rakhi thread can be simple or elaborately designed, and it may carry cultural or personal significance. The ritual is not limited to biological siblings; cousins, friends, and even neighbors can participate in this celebration to strengthen their bonds of friendship and camaraderie.
Rakshabandhan is not solely about the exchange of gifts and tying threads; it also holds cultural and emotional significance. It’s a time for families to come together, share meals, and enjoy each other’s company. The festival emphasizes the importance of mutual respect, care, and protection among siblings.
Over time, the festival has evolved, and its celebration might vary from region to region and from family to family. Nonetheless, at its core, Raksha Bandhan remains a cherished occasion that fosters and celebrates the special bond between brothers and sisters.
According to Drik Panchang, Rakshabandhan or Rakhi falls on Wednesday, August 30 . However, because of Bhadra Kaal, you can also tie Rakhi on August 31. Also known as Rakhi Purnima, the festival is celebrated on the full moon day.
