The Gangaur festival, also known as the Mewar Festival, is one of the most important festivals in Rajasthan. It is celebrated on the 1st day of the month of Baisakh (April–May) and marks the beginning of spring. There are many rituals and customs associated with this festival, including offering gifts to gods, worshiping Jain temples, and visiting shrines.
The Mewar Festival is a seven-day event that begins on the first day of Baisakh. Each day has its own unique rituals and traditions, but all together they make up what people consider to be one big cultural event.
This year the festival will be celebrated from March 24 to 26 in the city of lakes “Udaipur”. A vibrant parade through the streets is held during the festival, featuring magnificently painted goddess statues as well as a range of cultural acts, such as folk music and dancing. The festival is also dedicated to Goddess Parvati, the consort of Lord Shiva, and is celebrated by married women for the longevity and well-being of their husbands. The festival is celebrated with great enthusiasm and fervor, showcasing the rich cultural heritage of the Mewar region.
The festival brings people from different communities and backgrounds together, promoting social harmony and cohesion. It is an occasion for people to forget their differences and come together to celebrate and enjoy the festival. People can enjoy vibrant dance performances, cultural songs, enchanting live performances, impressive fireworks displays and lighting. The festival is also marked by the traditional firing of the ceremonial cannon at the City Palace in Udaipur.
