The City of Lakes

Nestled in the Aravalli Range of Rajasthan, Udaipur is a city that epitomizes romance and grandeur. One of its most defining features is the series of serene lakes that dot its landscape, each contributing to the city’s unique charm and allure.

Lake Pichola

Lake Pichola is perhaps the most famous and iconic of Udaipur’s lakes. Constructed in 1362 AD, it is an artificial freshwater lake created by Maharana Udai Singh II, the founder of Udaipur. The lake is surrounded by hills, palaces, temples, and bathing ghats, creating a mesmerizing panorama. The Lake Palace (now a luxury hotel) and Jag Mandir are two exquisite structures situated on islands within Lake Pichola, adding to its scenic beauty.

Fateh Sagar Lake

Fateh Sagar Lake, named after Maharana Fateh Singh of Udaipur, is another prominent water body in the city. It is known for its three islands, of which Nehru Park is a popular attraction. Boating in Fateh Sagar Lake is a delightful experience, offering panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and the cityscape.

Jaisamand Lake

Located about 48 kilometers from Udaipur, Jaisamand Lake is one of the largest artificial lakes in Asia. Constructed by Maharana Jai Singh in the 17th century, this expansive lake is surrounded by beautiful marble chhatris (cenotaphs), a grand island palace, and lush greenery. Jaisamand Lake is not only a scenic spot but also a haven for migratory birds during winters.

Rajsamand Lake

Rajsamand Lake, built by Maharana Raj Singh in the 17th century, is another significant water body near Udaipur. This historic lake is known for its intricate marble dam, ornamental arches, and stunning sunset views. The nearby Rajsamand city is named after this impressive lake.

Badi Lake

Also known as Tiger Lake, Badi Lake is a serene retreat located a few kilometers from Udaipur. Surrounded by hills and lush vegetation, Badi Lake offers a tranquil setting away from the bustling city. It’s a favorite spot for picnics and leisurely walks.

Lake Udai Sagar

Lake Udai Sagar, built by Maharana Udai Singh II, is situated 13 kilometers from Udaipur. It is a significant water source for irrigation and drinking water in the region. The lake’s dam, known as the “Berach River Project,” is an engineering marvel worth visiting.

The Lakeside Experience

Udaipur’s lakes not only provide a scenic backdrop but also offer a range of activities. Visitors can enjoy boat rides, sunset views, lakeside walks, and photography sessions. Many cafes and restaurants along the lakeside serve delicious local cuisine, allowing visitors to savor the beauty of Udaipur while indulging in its culinary delights.

Preserving Udaipur’s Lakes

Efforts are underway to preserve and maintain Udaipur’s lakes, given their historical and ecological significance. Local authorities and conservationists are working to address issues such as water pollution and encroachment to ensure that these natural treasures continue to enchant generations to come.
